All I Need
all I need is a pencil
an eraser or
some chalk
a pen, paper or a
sparkler
to write out all my
crazy thoughts
all I need is a box or
a brick
so I can sketch on
each and every side
or
maybe I could draw upon my kite
and let my imagination
………………………….fly

About the poem All I Need:
This poem is all about the need to create. My kids love to create art, music, you name it and we do everything we can to fuel their creativity and to let their imaginations fly. They don’t see the boundaries that many of us have, because really, you don’t need the finest paints, brushes, guitars, or whatever it is that you use, in order to create. All you need is passion, the rest will work itself out.
There’s this scene towards the end of When Harry Met Sally when Billy Crystal has a sudden moment of clarity, he then runs through the streets of New York City in the pouring rain. He goes right up to Meg Ryan, tells her he loves her and then says:
“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”
That’s exactly what the need to create feels like. Maybe you carry a notepad, a sketchpad, an iPad or you just use the recorder on your phone, it doesn’t matter. Let it fly.

I love this poem! I’m making a photo book for my class featuring them and their writing. I was wondering if I can use your poem for the cover page. The book will be auctioned off at a fundraising event for our school. Your permission to use your writing will be much appreciated. Of course, you will be listed as the author.
Thanks,
Anh
