The Last Time
The last time that I saw you
You looked brilliantly divine
Your clothes were ironed
Your hair was done
Your makeup was refined
Your shoes the perfect shade of blue
And the finest cut of suede
That was the last time that I saw you
Before you fell out in the rain
The last time that I saw you
Your beauty was so true
This time ….
(rub my eyes) ….
is that really you?

About the poem The Last Time:
There were three driving thoughts behind the poem The Last Time. The first was that I like to add actions into poems. Stuff like… shake your head, jump up and down, kiss your dad, or in this case, rub your eyes. The second is that Julia likes to dress up, so writing a poem about clothes, hair and makeup, well… just makes sense. Finally, my wife Kelly laughs anytime someone falls, well, with one exception – she doesn’t laugh when people get hurt. However, if no one get hurt, here comes the laughter.
