Pancaked
When mommy makes me pancakes
They’re small, cute and delicious
When daddy makes me pancake
It’s bigger than the dishes
When mommy pours my syrup
She puts a little here and a little there
When daddy pours the syrup
He puts a whole lot … everywhere
It seems pretty obvious to me
There’s mom and dad and in the middle is me

About the poem Pancaked:
There are moments when art imitates life,
and then there are moment when art is life. The poem pancaked is my life, believe me. My wife Kelly makes pancakes all of the time. In our house, if mom makes pancakes you can count on them being small, thin, covered in chocolate chips and served with a little bit of syrup. When dad makes pancake you can count on it being big and covered in syrup. My dream is to make it as big as the pancakes in the movie Uncle Buck (I just don’t want to have anything to do with the clean up.
Here is what I am really trying to convey in this poem. Most parents may relate to what I am about to write, my kids are a total mash-up of my wife and me. Our biggest challenge is giving them our best qualities… best challenge I have ever had.
