At 3 you’ll wanna be 5
At 5 you’ll wanna be 8Secret to the fulfilled life (cold side of the pillow) photo
At 8 you’ll wanna be 10 years old
At 10 13 looks pretty darn gr8

At 13 you’ll wanna be sweet 16
At 16 you’ll wanna graduate
When you graduate you’ll wanna be 21 years old
Which apparently is a very popular date

At 21 you’ll wanna be 25
At 25 you’ll wanna be 25 too
At 30 you’ll wanna be 25
Because wow those twenties really flew

At 35 you’ll wanna be sweet 16
And know all the things you know today
And at 40 you’ll settle for 35
or 39 and a whole buncha days

And after that time just speeds up
Remember those endless summers way back when?
Now a summer seems like a few pay stubs
Pay the bills, raise the kids and well… then…

But on the back of every pillow
Hot, sweaty, keeping you awake
Is a colder side, a simple pleasure side
That is just one flip away

So slow it down, wanna be “your” age
Cause’ here’s the secret to the fulfilled life
Notice one of life’s simple pleasures
Every day before you sleep every night

About the poem Secret to the Fulfilled Life (cold side of the pillow):

This is one of the favorite poems I’ve written and I’ll be the first to admit that this poem is more for adults than kids. I think I wrote this more for the lesson rather than the laugh. The first half of the poem is my take on age, I figured there would be some who agree with my take, but realistically memories of each age are going to vary dependent upon the life that you have led. The last 3 verses are focused on one of my philosophies to living a fulfilled life. Those who know me well have heard me talk about my cold side of the pillow philosophy to life, but if you haven’t here goes.

Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

John Lennon said this and he’s right. If you wait around and wait for the big days and the big moments you’ll miss the best of what life has to offer. Let’s face it, things rarely go exactly as planned, and if you’re put all of your stock in those big events then you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

Have you ever woken up on a hot summer night and your pillow is all hot and sweaty? Then you flip it and… ahhh, comfort. I love that. Being able to appreciate those little things. Here’s another for you. Have you ever gotten under the covers on a cold night and when you finally warm up you move your leg a few inches to the left or the right? That will send butterflies right to your stomach. I love that. The small things. Learn to see the good in others, don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself and learn to appreciate those tiny moments in life and you’ll be set.

  1. Great poem, I’m currently somewhere around the third verse, definitely think I’ll take your advice:)

  2. I’m glad you told me you wrote this poem, Chris! It’s so funny that you actually picked 25 as well!

And I agree about flipping the pillow over for the colder side…I ALWAYS did that as a kid! (And a bit as an adult).
