Imagine
Sometimes I stop and think
If I didn’t have a bath or sink
What if I went to a lake to get clean?
How much different would life seem?
Do you think you know what I mean?
Imagine I didn’t have a couch or a chair
I’d sit on rock’s when brushing my hair
My tushy would hurt but I’d be A-okay
Does it make much sense,
These things that I say?
Imagine I didn’t have the clothes on my back.
Wait…
Stop…
Please don’t imagine that!

About the poem Imagine:
There’s this gap between what kids know and what they fully understand. Actually I think we all have that gap, but with kids there is more pronounced gap that appears as they emulate the way adults (or the stars from their favorite TV shows) talk. It amazes me how good kids can get at using expressions at the right time, but I’ve also been amazed at their literal approach to life. This poem infuses their literal approach, their use of expressions and of course… their imagination.
